2026 Pre-Season Checklist: Are You Ring-Ready?!

The blankets are coming off, the coats are getting clipped, and that unmistakable show-season buzz is officially here. Whether you spent your winter in the sunny south or grinding in the indoor, it’s time to transition from “training mode” to “show mode.” Before you hitch up the trailer and head to your first show, let’s make sure you’re organized and ready to shine.

1. The “Must-Haves”: Membership & Points

At the very top of your list: Secure your OHJA membership. Points for year-end awards reception at the Royal Winter Fair only begin accumulating from the day you join. Don’t let a podium finish in May go uncounted because you forgot to renew! Renew your 2026 Membership here

Are you leasing your equine partner this season? Double-check that all lease agreements and paperwork are complete. Important Ownership Check! Does the horse owner have their OHJA membership too? A little administrative diligence now prevents major headaches in the show office later.

2. Plan Your Season Strategy

Now is the time to map out your 2026 calendar and prepare for our marquee team events. Success in these classes requires extra foresight and preparation:

The $5,000 OHJA Nation’s Cup (July 3 | Ottawa Summer 1): It’s time to start scouting your teammates! The OHJA Nation’s Cup is all about strategy and collective performance. As you assemble your “dream team,” don’t forget the logistical prep for the grass Grand Prix ring. Coordinate with your farrier now to ensure shoes are tapped for stud holes so your team has the traction needed to win on the turf.

The OHJA Team Derby (August 14 | The Mad Barn Summer Classic @ Caledon): A winning Derby performance is built at home. Start incorporating “Derby training” into your program now—focusing on the handy turns, bold gallops, and smooth transitions that catch the judge’s eye. While shadbellies are the standard for this class, coordinate with your team to add subtle touches like matching saddle pads or team colours to stand out for your style and unity.

3. Visit Us in Caledon!

We want to see you! The OHJA will have a booth in the Pavilion at Caledon Equestrian Park during the first two May shows on the following days:

  • The Used Tack Swap: April 27
  • The Caledon Welcome (May 9–10)
  • The Motion Endeavours Cup (May 16–17)

Stop by during the weekend to say hi, check your membership status in person, or ask any questions about the upcoming 2026 season.

4. Community: Meet Your 2026 Junior Ambassadors

We are thrilled to introduce our 2026 Junior Ambassador Team! Throughout the season, they will be spearheading fantastic initiatives and managing award presentations.

Have a question? Look for a Junior Ambassador wearing the official OHJA Armband at the ring. They are there to help and represent the future of our sport!

6. Look Good, Feel Good

New for 2026: Visit our brand new OHJA Online Store to grab your 2026 branded apparel and accessories before the first trailer loads!

Let’s Make This Season Unforgettable! By taking care of these essentials now, you’ll be prepared to focus on what matters most: the thrill of the ring. The OHJA wishes you a safe, successful, and fun-filled 2026 season!

See you at the ring!
